Q+A: Are Home Tooth Whiteners Safe?
Men's Health
October 2006

Q: Are home tooth whiteners safe? Can I misuse then and damage my teeth?

A: Most home tooth whiteners are completely harmless. As long as you follow the instructions provided with the package, you will be well on your way to having dazzling choppers in no time.

"But like anything else, if overused or used in the wrong way there is the potential for damage," says Dr. Morley, D.D.S., a San Francisco cosmetic dentist and cofounder of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. The first warning signs that you're using the product incorrectly or too often, according to Morley, are increased sensitivity to your teeth or gumms or white spots on your teeth. In either case, stop using the whitener immediately and set up an appointment with your dentist. And if home whiteners are not creating the effect you want, don't keep using them hoping they'll eventually kick in. Instsead, ask your dedntist for a stronger, prescription option.
